As a Ph.D condidate, I am working on High Performance Computing (HPC) systems with Solid State Disks (SSD, including NV memory) and surveying parallel I/O system software such as the Parallel Virtual File System (PVFS) and MPI-IO at Microsystems Design Lab (MDL) of Pennsylvania State University. Specifically, with my advisor, Mahmut Kandemir, I am researching several topics related to SSDs that provide a deterministic I/O performance thereby being employed by HPC as intermediate storage cache with great random access and unified throughputs. Before joining that, I earned master of computer science from Georgia Tech and Korea University, and I was involved in researching on flash memory software and developing embedded system in Samsung Electronics. When I was an undergraduate student, my favorite subjects were programming language theory and software architecture regarding object oriented paradigm. However, after working in Samsung electronics for 4 years, my favorite subjects were changed to computer architecture and operating system. Especially, I am interested in software based approaches for overcoming underlying storage system's restrictions in HPC area, by using state-of-the-art NV schemes such as NV caching, SSD-aware I/O scheduling, hybrid memory buffer management, and active storage for SSDs.
